Athlete Opportunities

Athlete Opportunities

  • Local Competitions: During each season, there is one practice each week to help athletes develop skills in that sport. During the season, there is a regional tournament typically held in Bismarck, Mandan, Dickinson or Minot. This allows athletes and teams to prepare for the state competition. In addition, we are invited to do exhibition games at the University of Mary, McQuade Softball Tournament, and the Bismarck Larks. Participation in these exhibitions is limited, but not mandatory, and are always a fun opportunity for athletes to show off their skills.
  • State Competitions: At the end of each season, Special Olympics North Dakota holds a State Tournament. To qualify, an athlete must attend the required number of practices and the regional tournament. State tournaments are held in different cities and sometimes require an overnight stay in a hotel. It is not a requirement of all athletes to compete at State. However, if an athlete does not plan to attend State Games, please inform the coaches, as this is very helpful information as they plan the season.
  • National Competitions: Once every four years, Special Olympics holds the USA Games. Athletes from Area 10 can be selected to represent Team North Dakota in these games. The selection process is partially based on results of competition at State and partially based on a lottery drawing. In 2026, the games are being held in Minneapolis!
  • World Competition Opportunities: Special Olympics International holds a World Summer Games and World Winter Games on a four-year rotation. The Summer Games will be held in Santiago, Chile, in 2027, and the Winter Games in Switzerland in 2029. Selection to World Games is based on results at State Competitions and a lottery drawing process.
